Wrapping Your Water Vessel: What You Need To Know

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

Vinyl vehicle wraps offer a plethora of benefits, from protecting the original paintwork to adding photo-quality graphics, so if you spend more time out on the water than on land, you might reasonably ask yourself: Should I wrap my boat too?

The short answer is yes– and without further ado, we’re going to take a deep-dive into our customers frequently asked questions associated to vinyl boat wrapping to help you with any queries you may also have.

Let’s get cracking!

Why Choose A Vinyl Boat Wrap?

Straight off the bat, full vinyl boat wraps are faster and more economical than say, having a vessel’s hull and topsides repainted. Additionally, they offer a high-quality smooth surface with any vivid colour, pattern or printed design of your choice. If you’re easily bored, or like to change things up, they can be easily removed.

Is A Vinyl Boat Wrap Permanent?

Like other vehicle wraps, we can add text and graphics to create the look you’re striving for, whether that’s a ‘vanity’ wrap, a colour change, adding the vessel’s name, company logos or sponsorship decals for racing yachts and speedboats.

How Much Does it Cost to Wrap a Boat?

Similar to ordering a small fries vs large fries at the McDonalds drive through, the cost depends on the size. Generally speaking, the savings compared with a paint job increase for bigger boats – anywhere from around a third to two thirds or more of the total cost.

How Long Does It Take to Wrap My Boat?

Again for obvious reasons, bigger boats take longer to wrap. Our team will always do their best to complete your vessel promptly while maintaining the highest standards – but you can bet your bottom dollar it will take significantly less time than a new paint job.

Can You Wrap Below the Water Line?

Vinyl hull wraps and vinyl keel wraps can be used below the water line but equally we can install boat wraps only on the visible part of the hull above the water line – If you’re able to drop by Kai's Signs, or send through images of your boat to our team, we’ll be able to help determine your options.

How Do I Care For My Boat Wrap?

Boat wrap maintenance is similar to car wrap maintenance. Basically, avoid prolonged exposure to harmful substances and ensure that if you have your boat professionally cleaned, they use a wax suitable for vinyl. No doubt you’ll already be in the habit of rinsing down your baby after a day on the water, but incase you forget, be sure to do that too!

How Long Does a Vinyl Boat Wrap Last?

God forbid you accidentally scrape along a harbour wall or mooring point, but if you’re one of the lucky ones who avoids direct damage, and you follow the basic boat wrap maintenance instructions, our modern boat wrap materials can last up to 5-7 years or even longer.

Can You Unwrap a Boat?

Absolutely! In fact, we have many boat-loving clients who like to reinvent the look and feel of their joyride almost seasonally! Vinyl hull wraps can be removed without leaving discolouration or adhesive residue behind, and this will usually restore the original paintwork as it appeared when it was covered over.
